Author: Paul
Audience: a group of believers in the city of Ephesus. Paul had led them to Christ. The story of the founding of this church is in Acts 16.
Ephesus was a Greek city under Roman occupation. It was a political and commerical center, as well as a pagan religious center. In fact, Ephesus contained the temple dedicated to the pagan goddess Diana.
Paul wrote the letter because these Christians, surrounded by a secular, pagan world, needed to know their doctrine, who they were in Christ and how to defend their faith from attacks. Paul spent time in this letter calling believers to living a heavenly life in a less-than-heavenly world.
